1801 baptism of Martin Wandlass Graydon, Jesse Graydon, and Mary Ann Graydon, children of Thomas Graydon & Elizabeth Wandlass
1801 baptism of Martin Wandlass Graydon, Jesse Graydon, and Mary Ann Graydon, children of Thomas Graydon & Elizabeth Wandlass
From the Bishop's Transcript of the Monkwearmouth parish register. The original register shows these 3 baptisms inserted in Jan 1801, with a baptism date of 18 December 1799, and it does not show the mother's name or nativity or her father's name, so the BT extract is particularly valuable.

Letter from Sir William Wanless to Mohandas K. Gandhi and Gandhi's response, 1931 (3 pages)
Written en route to London on the ship Moldavia on 19 Apr 1931, this letter reminds Mr. Gandhi that Dr. Wanless had treated him for apoplexy in 1927 at Nefarie and reports that Dr. Wanless had returned to India after his retirement to open the Wanless Tuberculosis Sanitorium near Miraj in 1930. I do not have the 3rd page of this letter, but apparently Sir Wm asked Gandhi to make a monetary donation to the hospital in Miraj, because Gandhi writes a polite refusal.

Map: Wandlass Place, Southwick, Durham, England
Map: Wandlass Place, Southwick, Durham, England
Probably named after John Wandlass (1792-1875), a shipowner who lived there (s/o John Wandlass & Jane Brown). A set of buildings called Wandlass Place appears in each census from 1841 through 1891 and on several maps from 1855 onwards, but on the 1895 O.S. map they are just shown as part of Fern Avenue, just north east of Southwick Parish Church, which is where you can find what appear to be three of the original buildings today. In the LDS version of the 1881 census they have been transcribed as "Handlass St."." This picture is from an 1880 map which appears to be an identical (but better quality) reprint of an 1855 map.
