Grandpa Wanless, 1916, Oakland, CA - possibly Albert s/o Stephen Wilson Wanless & Fanny Duffield
The back is a postcard with "Grandpa Wanless, 3rd from right" and "Oakland" written on it in blue pen in one hand, and in black pen, it says "(L. Wanless)" and"1916". Lyle Everett Wanless, whose family this came from, was only 11 or 12 years old in 1916. The men appear to be street car or bus conductors or drivers. Lyle's father Albert had been a driver in Portland, OR in the 1890s; is it him, around age 43? The car looks like the Portland trolley shown here:

Jane Laws Wanless or a child or grandchild of hers
Jane Laws Wanless or a child or grandchild of hers
This is thought to be Jane Laws, wife of Robert Wanless (1812-1879, son of Robert Wanless & Alice Mould), but her apparent age would date this photo to the 1840-50s, and the quality seems too good to be that early...so it's possible that this is a child or grandchild of Robert Wanless & Jane Laws.

Janet (Drummond) Wanliss (1801-1876) of Jamesfield, Carpow, and St. Magdalene's farm, Perth, about 1860
One of two paintings in the collection of the Art Gallery of Ballarat in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. The other is of her husband John Wanliss. The clothing and age of the subjects dates the pictures to around 1860. Labels on the back link to a frame maker in Perth, and although the paintings are unsigned, the artist is believed to be John Maclaren Barclay (1811-1886), based on comparisons to known paintings made by him that are in the Perth Art Gallery. The paintings have recently been conserved. John & Janet's son Thomas Drummond Wanliss emigrated to Australia in the 1850s and lived at Ballarat. He returned to Scotland for a visit in 1861, so he may have brought the paintings back with him then.
