Note on back of photo identifies center woman with bonnet as Margaret Halket Wanless. Far left with hands folded together is George Turnbull, husband of Sarah Elizabeth Wanless; far right is Sarah Elizabeth with their first-born daughter Ella who was born 1898-99. John Wanless is supposed to be to the right of his mother Margaret, and his wife Sarah Rife Wanless is in the back, 2nd from the left. We have not yet put names to the rest of the people, although presumably they are related.

Possibly James Wanless (1811-1889) of Dundee in the 1860s
This unidentified daguerrotype was found in the belongings of James B. Wanless along with the pictures of his parents David & Christiana. These were the only pictures he had of this vintage, leading us to believe this is a picture of a valued family member. It may be a photo of his grandfather James, taken in the 1860s, some 25+ years after the 1838 wedding portrait, or it may be some other member of this family.

Robert Wanless (1812-1879, son of Robert Wanless & Alice Mould) - maybe
This is thought to be Robert Wanless (1812-1879, son of Robert Wanless & Alice Mould), but his apparent age would date this photo to the 1840-50s, and the quality seems too good to be that early...so it's possible that this is a child or grandchild of Robert Wanless & Jane Laws.

Signature quilt given to Susan Wanless, circa 1840s-1850s, in West Virginia, Ohio, or Wisconsin
Signature quilt given to Susan Wanless, circa 1840s-1850s, in West Virginia, Ohio, or Wisconsin
There is no date on the quilt. The names on the quilt are her family and friends in West Virginia. It was probably a gift for her move to Ohio, or possibly for her later wedding. Some of the names on the quilt are:
Mr. William Wanless --- Cousin
Sara Taylor --- 1st Cousin
John Taylor --- 1st Cousin
Uncle Richard Wanless
Christopher Douglas --- 1st Cousin
John D Wanless --- Brother
Archibald Wanless --- Brother
Francis Wanless --- 1st Cousin
Eleanor Rutherford --- Aunt
Mary Halle --- friend?
Jane Barklay --- friend?
Robert McBay --- friend?
Mrs. Young --- friend?
etc.
Note the spelling of Wanless on the close up pictures. It almost looks like Wanlefs; apparently they were still using the old-style "double s" character. The names were all written by the same person. Susan's name is spelled Susana on the quilt.
The quilt is owned (in 2005) by the Great-Grand Niece of Susan Wanless Blair, Sylvia (Nottestad) Gasser of Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
