    Biography
    • Comments of grandson Ralph Galloway Wanless, who was 11 when she died:
Grandma Wanless had strange ways. I never understood her altogether. Mother says she was a beautiful well-built woman. I wonder if she missed the mountains of West Virginia as she used to go out in deep timber and walk and rest every once in a while. She had plenty of work to keep her mind clear with seven robust children to keep clothed and healthy. She used to use wool and card and weave it and make clothes for all of them. Well, no two people alike. I think she used to call me honey. She carried many of the ways of the mountaineers, I guess to the end....I remember going to their place in South Cresco one evening - I ran all the way and she greeted me [love?] and got me shed of overshoes and overcoat and cap and mittens, then got supper for Grandpa Leven and an old trapper (a distant relative) that came to visit them at times from up in Minnesota, maybe up near Northfield, I don't disremember. They were all getting old. I had come up to play parchesi or some other game.

    (I think the Cresco Times)
    • Wanless - Jan 4, 1895, in Cresco, IA, of paralysis, aged 76 years 2 months and 6 days, Nancy Dilly, wife of Levan Wanless, mother of Alonzo of Winnesheik co, Emile, Perry, Oliver, and Mrs. Lizzie Damon of Howard co, Mrs. Derinda Holt of Minn., Eldredge of Arizona, and Asbury of Oregon. Mrs Wanless was born in Bath county and married in 1836 in Pocahontas co West Virginia. In 1856 the family removed to Winnesheik co IA near Plymouth Rock where their six sons and 2 daughters grew to maturity. They moved to Cresco in 1884. One daughter died in infancy 50 years ago, and from that time no death has occurred in the family until the mother was called. Before her marriage she united with the Methodist church and has always cherished that faith living a consistent Christian life, devoted to her home, her friends, and her daily duties. She was the fondest of wives and mothers, even studying and toiling to add to the pleasure and comfort of her husband and children. Two sons wandered to the West many years ago, one of whom never returned, but he was held close in loving tenderness by the mother heart that longed and mourned for him to the last. The funeral was conducted Sunday morning, Jan 6, at the home by Rev. S. H. Mitchell, who quoted numerous comforting texts from the Bible she loved. The Baptist choir, with Mrs I.J. Booth accompanist, rendered sweet music. The interment was in Oak Lawn cemetery. A good woman has gone home.
