    Notes
    • Occupation: Shoemaker/Bedesman At Durham Cathedral

      Note from Claire Wandless:
Various people have attempted to find a birth for William in the Durham City archives circa 1824/5.  The only one which has been located is an illegitimate birth entered in the Chapel of The Secular Clergy and the Jesuits Roman Catholic Chapel in Aug 1824.  If this is "our man" it might explain the lack of a father on his marriage cert and also the lack of any apparent possible parents/ siblings in the locality?
This illegitimate Gulielmus Wanless bap Aug 1824 was the son of Mary Wanless.  Durham Record Office has a "Removal Order" (EP/ DuMB68) dated 30 April 1824 pertaining to a single woman, Mary Wanless, who is "with child".  It documents how, although she is living in the parish of St Nicholas, Durham City, her actual place of Settlement is deemed to be St Mary Le Bow, Durham City. As such the Overseers of the Poor and / or the Churchwardens were instructed to ensure she was removed from St Nicholas parish and delivered to St Mary Le Bow.

This baptism may refer to the same Willam, or another one:
      Durham City St. Nicholas
1 Jan 1826 William illegitimate son of Mary Wanless, now resident in Elvet

Best match marriage for Mary would then be:
1826 Durham St Giles to John Heaviside
Mary Heaviside appears with her children in St Nicholas in several censuses. She does not have another son named William, for what it's worth. Later censuses show that she was from Ouston/Lumley/Chester-le-Street, born about 1800. William was not with her in the 1841 census.

Another possibility: Typically, a bedesman, which William was, has long-standing connections within the city. Robert Wanless & Elizabeth Simpson had a daughter Mary Wanless born at St Mary le Bow in 1808. Robert's father Ralph was a butcher in Durham City.

This William Wanless does not appear to be in the 1841 census. Given the prevalence of the middle name of Cathron in his children, there is a strong possibility is that a Cathron was his father. IF this is true, we might expect the descendant DNA sample to show a match to Cathron DNA rather than Wanless DNA (in the male-to-male Y-DNA test). Or perhaps a Cathron was a benefactor, or the shoemaker to whom William was apprenticed.

Here is a possible 1841 census entry:
Durham City 1841 Census, Saint Nicholas, Claypath (HO107/320/7/folio 29)
Margery Cathrine, 63, Independent Means, Y
William Cathrine, 18, Apprentice Shoemaker, Y
Tamar Clark, 59, Independent Means, Y

Note he is an apprentice shoemaker, which William Wanless was later. There is no corresponding William Cath*r*n in the 1851 census and no corresponding baptism found.

This is probably the marriage of Margery:
16 FEB 1802 Saint Nicholas, Durham - John Catharon & Margery Henderson
The IGI doesn't show any children for John & Margery nor does it show a baptism for William Cat*r*n* around 1823. William could be their son, born when Margery was about 45, or he could be a grandson, child of some yet-unknown child of theirs, or another relative.

Probably the burial of Margery's husband at St Giles:
24 Jul 1832 John Catherine [Cathron/Catron], of Claypath, age: 55

Durham St. Nicholas chr 3 May 1802 William Catheron, born 27 Apr, illegitimate son of John Catheron (gardener, native of this Parish) by Ann Prince (singlewoman)
-- buried a week later, so this can't be the father of Wm b. 1825

Long shot: Margery's civil death record might show Wm Wanless as an informant...
      Sep 1849   Cathron  Margery    Durham &c  24 80
Buried at Durham St Margaret: 8 Aug 1849 Margery Cathron, of Castle Chare, age: 72
Note Wm lived at Castle Chare in 1846 when he married.

Would like to search Durham City apprentice records to see if William Wanless or Catherine was apprenticed to a shoemaker around 1837.
