    Notes
    • From Sharon Pratt Wilbur:
The following note is written in my great grandmother's (Emily Wanless Reeves) own handwriting probably pursuant to a conversation with George F. Wanless in Salt Lake City, as Emily wrote she and her granddaughter Marian Brown visited with him. (January 1927) "Thomas Wanless born in Scotland and emigrated to Montreal Canada. He had a brother John who lived in Montreal too. He (John) was well read and well versed in the Scriptures, and of a modest retiring disposition.

Birthdate 1 Jun 1789 from Who's Which, but it's after his christening date in the parish register. Says he came to Canada about 1817 by way of South Carolina. Lived in St Andrews East for more than 50 yrs; church records transferred to Presby. Church at Onslow, Que. Unmarried. Shows church cert signed by priest in Yetholm on 16 Apr 1817, recommending John to any church he cares to join.

Death notice (but no date) from paper in St Andrews East, Que: "John Wanless was born at Yetholm, Scotland in 1789, coming to St. Andrews East, Que. where he was an influential and energetic member of the community of St Andrews, Argentuile County. He was the eldest son of the last family of the name of Wanless, who inhabited the "Straith, Bowmont Water", a pleasing river that runs through the Cheviot Hills, where the Sept or clan was said to have been at one time very numerous and to have resided for several generations." [Who's Which]

The 1831 census shows him as married with a child under 5.
