      Among the promotions mentioned in the 99th during the past week was Private W.A. Wanless of Amherstburg, promoted to sergeant and transferred to base company at Windsor. Sergeant Wanless is battalion tailor.

      W.E. Wanless Dies
      After a long career in the service of Essex County, William E. Wanless, aged 87, former court crier and constable, died Tuesday in Windsor, following a lengthy illness. Mr. Wanless was born in Chatham and came to Windsor in 1917. From 1917 to 1930, he held the position of governor of the Essex county jail. After 1930 he was court crier until that position was abolished in 1935. He then took the position of court constable, which he held until retirement several years ago.
      Ill for the past two years, Mr. Wanless formerly resided at 3202 Sandwich street west. He was a member of St John's Anglican Church. He held a life membership in the I.O.O.F. Sandwich Lodge No. 464.
      He is survived by one son, William (Ted) in Detroit, and two sisters: Mrs Watson Beamor of Chatham and Mrs Frank Johnson of Wallaceburg; one grandson James of Detroit. Mrs. Wanless (Georgie) died in April of this year. There are three great-grandchildren.
      Burial will be in Maple Leaf cemetery, Chatham.
