      Water Police Court - Tuesday
«/b»Charles Price was brought before the Court on two charges - for wilfully damaging a table in the house of Bridget M'Quillan, Gloucester street, by breaking off the legs, and for assaulting Richard Wanless, a labourer who, having been called upon to assist the police engaged in the prisoner's apprehension, went to their aid and was cut in the lip by a kick from Price. Prisoner appeared totally oblivious of what had taken place and expressed regret for the injury he had done. He was fined.

      «b»The Sydney Morning Herald «/b»Tuesday 7 January 1862
A constable of the D division of the Metropolitan police force had, in the execution of his duty, on the 23rd of Dec last, to arrest a man named Charles Price, a pugilist, on warrant. The prisoner was very violent and made desperate resistance - so much so that the constable was compelled to call upon bystanders for aid. No one responded to the call but a man named Wanless, whose conduct on the occasion was highly creditable. The Inspector-General, to mark his sense of this man's behaviour, has caused him to be presented with a gratuity of five pounds sterling.

I have not found a record of how Richard arrived in NSW, emigrated or transported. [Mark Firkins]
He probably came of his own accord, as transportation ended in 1842 with a few convicts arriving up to 1849. [NSW State Record Archive website]

Braidwood, where Richard & Jane married, was a gold mining town that exploded with gold fever in the early 1850s, so he probably came there for that.

Age 40 at son Wm's birth in January 1862, so b. Jan 1821-Jan 1822; age 64 at death in 1883, so b. abt 1819. In general, earlier & self-reported records are more accurate, so the 1821 date is probably closer and fits well with the June 1821 christening at Stockton St. Thomas of the only Richard in the right time frame.

Not found in 1841 UK census. May have been a mariner at sea.
