Emily Wanless had her own handwritten records, now in possession of V. R.
Pratt, Bountiful, Utah, which recorded the history of the Reeves and of the
Wanless's, from her available information, which may or may not be correct.
      p. 76, 77:

"William Wanless born in Scotland in 1792, of Edinborough. Married a widow named Ann Hattersley (record says incorrectly "Tattersall". Virginia has copy of original marriage record giving her name to be Ann Hattersley, a widow.) She was his 1st wife while living in Hunslet, Leeds. Emily W. was unsure whether it was her maiden name or her widow's name. When he married her she had two young daughters named respectively, Jane and Elizabeth. William was employed as her gardener before he married her. She was a member of the Society of Friends, or Quakers. She died about 1825, and was buried in Churchyard of Society of Friends on Woodhouse Lane, near Leeds, England. After her marriage to Grandfather, her two young daughters were educated for governesses at a boarding school kept by the Society of Friends. Emily Wanless thought it was called the Ackworth School. The above William Wanless had an older brother, unmarried, who died in Scotland about 1850. Also a married brother named John, who was living in New Castle on Tyne about 1847. He also had a younger brother named Gilbert, who was married to Jane--------. They lived in Leeds, England about 1850. They settled in Montreal, Canada, where he established a general mercantile store. He had two sons and a daughter, named respectively, Ben, Ewen and Emily, when they emigrated to Canada. He and his daughter, Emily went on a visit to England in 1860. "I do not know whether, Grandfather had any other brothers or sisters." said Emily Wanless. There has been no temple work done for grandfather's brothers at this date, 1929. Grandfather ( William Wanless, 1792) had a book entitled, "Clarkson's Quakerism" and on the fly-leaf was inscribed the name, Elizabeth Hattersley. I think that was probably his step-daughter's name.

There was a Miss Elizabeth Hattersley taught school in the 6th ward, Salt Lake City, in May 1865. Mary L. Morris, wife of Elias Morris, sent one of her children to be taught by her. Grandmother's daughter, Elizabeth, would be about 48 years old at that time. (Page 128 Vol. 1 Journal of Mary L. Morris)."

      Occupation: a gardener

The Following appears to be our William also--

Listed in /1851-1852 Burgess Rolls for Leeds.

"Information Relative to the Wanless Line of Genealogy from the Records of Mrs. Emily Wanless Reeves, 1396 So. Main St., SLC UT: (Letter to Wm W. Anderson 23 Aug 1932)
My Grandfather, William Wanless, was born in Scotland, in or near Edinburg, in 1792. He died Dec. 14, 1862, in Hunslet, Leeds, Yorkshire, Eng., and was buried in the Chapelside of the Woodhouse Hill Cemebery, Hunslet. There is no stone marking the grave but the dates, etc. are a matter of record in the parish. Grandfather William Wanless had a brother John (married) who resided in Newcastle-on-Tyne, Eng. about 1847 and a younger brother, Gilbert Wanless, who married Jane----and who lived for a time in Leeds, England but later settled in Montreal, Canada. His residence in Leeds was somewhere around the year 1850 and at the time of his emigrating to Canada he had two sons and a daughter, named Ben, Ewen and Emily, respectively. Gilbert established a general merchandise store in Montreal and carried on this business for a number of years.
William Wanless also has another brother who died in Scotland somewhere around 1850 or 1851. In all probability his death occurred prior to the summer of 1851. My reason for thinking so is that my grandfather William Wanless received a legacy from this brother after his death with which he purchased a piece of property in Giles Street, (later re-named Tender Street) in Hunslet, Leeds, England. Part of this property he sold to his son John (my father) who built his home thereon and shortly after completing the house a daughter, (my sister Ellen) was born to John and Eliza Saville Wanless on October 4, 1851. From the fact that the date of my sister Ellen's birth was in the latter part of the year 1851 I am led to believe that my grandfather's brother died in Scotland some little time prior to that date.
Grandfather William Wanless died in his home in Hunslet, Leeds, in December 1862.
In all probability there would be some record in Scotland of wills or bequests by means of which this particular legacy might be traced and a clue obtained to grandfather's brother and thro him some other ancestors."

From a short biography of Elizabeth Wanless Reeves, written by Benita Reeves Lang (copy in possession of Sharon Pratt Wilbur)
"Her father (John Wanless) owned the house where grandma (Elizabeth) lived. She and ten other children were born in it. It was a part of a long terrace where each unit was individually owned. Great- great-grandfather Wanless was a Scotchman, a widower as long as grandma could remember and lived alone in his own home, which was part of the same long terrace where she lived. His name was William Wanless. He had a very broad brogue which he made no effort to overcome- being very proud of being Scotch. The house had a basement which was used as a kitchen and store room. On the main floor was the living room and main kitchen. Upstairs were the bedrooms. All the homes in the Terrace were the same. The building was stone with tile floors and one front step that led from the front door to the street.
