      Notes from Jerry Ingram:
I really don't have a great deal of information on Ellan Wanless Urwin prior to their immigrating to America. I have no record of any siblings for her. My information shows that the family immigrated to America in 1850. They arrived in New Orleans on May 4, 1850 and came up the Mississippi River to Galena, IL. I did a thorough search of the New Orleans passenger list and could not find any Urwin's arriving in New Orleans in 1849 or 1850. They lived in New Diggings, WI, which is located right on the WI/IL state line. William Urwin worked in the lead mines in that area. Ellen apparently died while the lived in New Diggings but is buried in the Council Hill, IL cemetery. Council Hill is about 3 miles south of New Diggings and is nothing more than a church, town hall and a cemetery. I could not find the grave. Many of the stones are weathered to the point that they can no longer be read. She died 22 Feb. 1853. There is no record of her death in Jo Daviess Co., IL so I assume she died in WI.
They arrived in America with 4 children. Elizabeth, my great grandmother, Thomas, John and William. William died shortly after Ellen and is also buried at Council Hill. On 13 June, 1853 William Urwin married a widow, Elizabeth Thompson. They were married in Benton, WI. Elizabeth Thompson had two children from her previous marriage, Joseph and Anne, both of whom were born in England. William Urwin and Elizabeth Thompson Urwin had one child, William George, who was born 28 June 1855. The two Elizabeth's makes it confusing at times. Back to Ellen's family, Thomas and John both moved to Nebraska with the family. Elizabeth died on 3 May, 1906 and I don't know where she is buried. I could not find her grave in Louisville. My great grandfather, James Ingram, married Elizabeth Urwin on 16 May, 1856 in Louisville, NE. Why they moved on west to Nuckolls Co. NE I don't know but both are buried in the Greenwood Cemetery in Lawrence, NE. We try to get to the cemetery every Memorial Day and decorate the grave. I haven't done anything with the English census.
      ----------
"History of Cass County Nebraska." Article No. F651 is a biography of William Urwin. In that article it states " Ellen was the daughter of Thomas Wandless and Margaret (Hallaway) Wandless." The article also states that her exact birth date is not known but she was christened on May 18, 1823. Joan Eager Addyman who wrote the article states that the information for that article came from "Who's Who in Cass County" and "1882 History of the State of Nebraska." [Jerry Ingram]
      ------------------
The christening date for the d/o Thomas & Margaret is correct, but this is not this Ellen/Eleanor. Ellen's marriage record to Wm Urwin names her father as William Wanless a husbandman (farmer). Thomas above was a coal miner (as we know from other records).
      --------
1841 census says she WAS born in Northumberland and her husband was not. Of course this could be wrong.
      ---------
Based on where she married, she is most likely the daughter of William Wanless & Annas Towers, born at Penrith, Cumberland in 1817 - but we can't place her likely sister Mary who is with her in the 1841 census. Her likely parents:

1841 census - Fishburn Village, Fishburn, DUR
William Wanless or Wandless, 50, Agricultural Labourer
      Ann W, 50, N
      Jane W, 15

and the remarried father & his 2nd wife:
1851 Bishop Middleham, Co. Durham (HO 107/2384, page 20)
William WANLESS Head, Married age 60, Agricultural labourer, born Shildon, Durham
Mary WANLESS Wife, Married age 40, born Norton, Durham
Elizabeth WANLESS Daughter, age 5, Scholar, born Fishburn, Durham
