    Notes
    • LINK TO PARENTS IS SOMEWHAT SPECULATIVE. We know that James had a sister named Agnes because his daughter Agnes's birth record says she was named for her paternal aunt. We know that James & Agnes (Sime) Wanless christened children named James and Agnes, from parish records, and these events all occurred in the same place (Dundee) at the right times. We know that James had an Agnes b. abt 1791 living with him in the 1861-1881 census in Canada - likely his mother. It's not proof, but it's probably right.
      ------------------
Birthdates of James & Margaret Halket & their children from family records and Varna in Review. Note James's birthdate from parish record is a month later.
chr. 29 Oct. 1811 Wanless, James - child of James a manufacturer, & Agnes Sime, named after father, b. 12 Oct. [Romeril film]
      -------------------
Family legend has that they were buried next to the Presbyterian Church in a cemetery in an area where the "pioneers " were buried however, no formal gravesite exists today.

Ontario Archives doesn't have Varna or Huron co newspapers, so no obituary available. Note that James died 10 months after his presumed mother Agnes.

-- this could be his son James...

Varna in Review (book by Floyd McAsh), 1886-1900, p. 21 - the book doesn't say what year this was, but is in the 1886-1900 section: "On Monday evening about 8 o'clock, a dastardly attempt at incendiarism was perpetrated in our usually quiet village. Shortly after that hour a big blaze was seen reaching to the top of the house of Mr. James Wanless, Police Magistrate. Mr. Wm. Wanless was the first to notice the fire. An inquest was held but no evidence was found."
-- don't know if this is James or his son James

According to the Canada Archives, the 1851 census images for Stanley Twp are missing.

Son John, in the 1911 census, has a "cousin" Jessie (female) Wanless living with him, born Scotland in January 1830. If she's really a first cousin, she should be the child of a sibling of this James, but I can't find any named Jessie.

This unidentified daguerrotype was found in the belongings of James B. Wanless along with the pictures of his parents David & Christiana. These were the only pictures he had of this vintage, leading us to believe this is a picture of a valued family member. It may be a photo of his grandfather James, taken in the 1860s, some 25+ years after the 1838 wedding portrait, or it may be some other member of this family.

Contracted 23 Nov 1832, married 26th ** - James Wanless and Margaret Baxter, both of this parish, dau. of Da. Baxter, manuf'r.
** The date is written just as "26th" with no month specified, and it is between two Dec marriages, but it looks like no month means Nov on this page because it's headed November and only the Dec marriages have a month written in. It's unfortunate that James's occupation wasn't shown.
Interestingly, Lily Hardy Wanless's notes of her research in Edinburgh said that this marriage stated that David Baxter was a LINEN manufacturer. I wonder if she assumed that or saw some other version of this marriage record? Also, she recorded the date as 23 Nov, which is the contract date - wonder if there is a contract document somewhere?

**The month is not written, but other dates have Jan 1838 next to them, presumably meaning that all dates that don't show that are Dec 1837, as the page is headed.
