23 Sep 1931, Harrisburg, IL - Harvey Thompson, a coal miner, held staunchly to his plea of innocence today as police sought to find the maker of an inferman machine which exploded in a borrowed motor truck, killing two youths. Thompson, exhausted from long hours of questioning, admitted to "borrowing" two dynamite sticks several days ago, but other miners corroborated his statement that he had used them in dynamiting coal in a small mine near here. The 35 yr old miner was arrested when a possible motive for the bombing was seen in the fact that his brother in law Mark Wanless, owner of the truck, was arrested a week ago on a charge of beating his wife so badly she was taken to a hospital. Albert Farmer, 21, and his cousin T.S. Farmer, 18, were killed when the infernal machine exploded as they started to drive away from a farm yesterday after trying to borrow a horse and wagon. Earlier they had secured use of the truck from Wanless, repair shop proprietor.

19 Oct 1931 - Harrisburg, ILL - Mark Wanless, 37, repair shop proprietor and owner of the small motor truck in which an infernal machine was placed last Sept 22, causing the death of two youths who had borrowed the machine, was arrested Saturday on murder charges. State's Attorney D.F. Rumsey filed the charges against Wanless after an investigation into the hitherto baffling case, but declined to say what the basis was for the arrest. Wanless stoutly denied he had any knowledge of the crime.

20 Oct - Secrecy surrounded today reasons for arrest of Mark Wanless, repair shop auto welder, and Jesse Harrison, coal miner, held on murder charges in connection with the death of two youths from an explosion caused by an infernal machine. Officers said the result of their investigation in to the case, which brought the arrests, would be withheld until the grand jury meets. Wanless was owner of a motor truck which Albert and T.S. Farmer, cousins, borrowed on Sept 22. It blew up and wires of an infernal machine were found in the wreckage. Harrison is a friend of Wanless.

[I have been unable to find out what happened after this. Searches in the later newspapers turn up nothing, but the Harrisburg paper is not available online for this period. Note that Harvey (William Harvey) Thompson is actually the son-in-law of Mark's sister Marrion, so more of a nephew-in-law of Mark.]
