Perthshire - the farm at Saint Magdalene's presently occupied by Mr Wanliss will be let, with entry at Martinmas 1866. This very desirable farm lies close to Perth. It extends to 338 acres Imperial. The land is all arable and some of it is the finest quality. The dwelling house is situated on the higher ground and commands a beautiful view of the River Tay and Kinnoull Hill. James Miller, gamekeeper at Craigie, will show the farm. The present tenant is not to be an offerer.

    • Wanliss John, will recorded 4/12/1868, Sometime Farmer at Saint Magdalenes near Perth thereafter residing at Croft House by Perth, recorded in Perth Sheriff Court
    Notes
    • !Name is spelled in various records: Wanless, Wanliss, Wanlis, Wanlass
Birthdate may be 4 July 1789 - in the Surname Index to Perth Christenings, there was an unnamed child born on that date to David Wandliss. Need to see original parish register to check on this.

Note naming pattern for children (father is John, mother is Janet below):
      David - father's father
      Thomas Drummond - mother's father
      Agnes Drummond - mother's mother
      Janet Moon - father's mother
William - father's paternal grandfather? also matches mother's maternal grandfather; see below
John - self, and used it again after first one died
Mary Anne - supposed to be father's grandmother
Drummond - mother's maiden surname; this is unusual
Elizabeth - ??? - supposed to be mother's eldest sister; matches father's eldest sister, maybe Janet Drummond didn't have an elder sister
Agnes Somerville - probably mother's grandmother;see Agnes Cunningham notes; her parents may be Wm Cunningham & Agnes Somerville

Marriage notice in Blackwood's Magazine says they married Nov 30 at Eastbank, Perthshire.

John & Janet were listed as the parents on their grandson Newton's Dec 1861 onboard-ship birth record - I wonder if they actually were on board the ship and were considered the heads of family by whoever took the birth report? Might they have traveled to Australia with their son Thomas, and then returned to Perth, on the voyage where Newton was born? Otherwise, if they were not present, why would their names be on Newton's birth record?

One of two paintings in the collection of the Art Gallery of Ballarat in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. The other is of his wife Janet Drummond. The clothing and age of the subjects dates the pictures to around 1860. Labels on the back link to a frame maker in Perth, and although the paintings are unsigned, the artist is believed to be John Maclaren Barclay (1811-1886), based on comparisons to known paintings made by him that are in the Perth Art Gallery. The paintings have recently been conserved. John & Janet's son Thomas Drummond Wanliss emigrated to Australia in the 1850s and lived at Ballarat. He returned to Scotland for a visit in 1861, so he may have brought the paintings back with him then.
