Robert killed his wife Anne Barlow in a fit of jealous rage, then killed himself with a gun while on a train from Manchester to Liverpool.

He was a widower when he married Anne Barlow, but we don't know who his first wife was yet. Had no children by his first wife, per the newspaper article in the Scotsman about his death. Was listed as single, with his parents, in the 1861 census.
