    Notes
    • Children's baptisms say he is native of Church/Kirk Merrington. Possible parents Ralph Wanless & Ann Gray in Kirk Merrington tree. Only Merrington baptism is for John Wanlass 24 May 1761 to William. 1840 death notice says he was 86, placing his birth abt 1754. Ralph & Ann didn't marry until 1762, and John did name his first son Wm, so perhaps Wm is his father. Maybe Ralph & William were brothers.

The admittedly flimsy proof that John the butcher (per his children's marriage records) is John who married Ann Hartley/Harpler is based on daughter Ann's christening record, which names her mother. This assumes that Ann born 1820 Sunderland to John & Ann is the Ann d/o John a butcher who was born Sunderland ca 1821 per the 1851 census. We don't have any other christenings for an Ann to a John in Sunderland circa 1820. It would be nice to find a christening for John's other children that tied his occupation to his wife. Also note John's possible uncle or father Ralph was a butcher at the end of his life.

John the butcher died at Mariners Lane in May 1840 and his wife died in Dec 1840. Dau Ann, in Sep 1838, was a minor living on Mariners Lane in Sunderland. By 1841 she lived there with her husband and sister, but no sign of parents, which makes sense if they both died in 1840.

Why do John & Ann have so many children born in Darlington but not christened at St. Cuthbert's? Was there another place to christen there, or were they not religious?

All of his surviving sons were master mariners out of Sunderland.
