neighbors: Dennis O'Brien, Samuel Meyers, Godfrey Capineau, John Barter, Patrick Jordan, Benjamin Ibbotson. Of these, Patrick Jordan is in the 1871 Lovell directory at 23 Notre Dame; Benjamin Ibbotson's stationery business is at 230 Notre Dame, home 24 St Louis; Samuel Myers, watchmaker/jeweller is at 37 Notre Dame, so we're 90% sure this is the 43 Notre Dame address listed in the city directory
-- Lawrence must be Ewen (who was a merchant at this time), perhaps with Laura's name merged with his, as she is missing. Emily is mistakenly listed as married, probably because she was the first adult female.

!Emily Wanless Reeves Record Book P 76-77 (In possession of Virginia R. Pratt, Bountiful, Utah:
"William Wanless had a younger brother named Gilbert, who was maried to Jane-----. They lived in Leeds, England about 1850. They settled in Montreal, Canada, where he established a general mercantile store. He had two sons and a daughter, named respectively, Ben, Ewen and Emily, when they emigrated to Canada. He and his daughter, Emily went on a visit to England in 1860. "

Emily Wanless Reeves' notes (before 1932): "Montreal, Canada--Gilbert Wanless; Sr., Gilbert Wanless Jr, son of Jane and Gilbert Wanless; Ewen, son of Jane and Gilbert Wanless; Ben, son of Jane and Gilbert Wanless; Emily Wanless, daughter of Jane & Gilbert Wanless"

Gilbert died in 1883 while visiting family near Hamilton, Ontario. [Marya Rose-Buckingham]

The original handwritten tree for this family listed his middle name is Kilpatrick, but we don't know the source for this and haven't yet seen it in any official record. Probing the IGI for the name Gilbert Kilpatrick turned up this:
Gilbert Kilpatrick married Margaret Bow 14 Jul 1744 Kelso, Roxburgh (Film 1067946)
I think these are their children:
Thomas Kilpatrick christened 29 Mar 1748 Kelso, Roxburgh Father: Gilbert Kilpatrick Mother: Margaret Bowhill
John Kilpatrick christened 29 Apr 1750 Kelso, Roxburgh Father: Gilbert Kilpatrick Mother: Margaret Borchill
Gilbert Kilpatrick Christened 7 Apr 1754 Kelso, Roxburgh Father: Gilbert Kilpatrick Mother: Margaret Bowhill
-- I couldn't find any connection with the Wanless family. Could our Wanless group have carried this name down of just a family friend?
      ----------------------

Could try to find in 1851 census, City of Montreal, FHL 517305. Two other films contain outlying areas of Montreal, but it seems Gilbert lived in the city based on his 1851 directory entry.

In 1878, Gilbert's 4 surviving children were legatees in their uncle John Wanless's will.
