    • James Wanless, Duluth Attorney, Is Dead At 72
      James Wanless, 72, prominent as a lawyer in Duluth for the past half century and once a leader in the social and professional life of the city, died yesterday at St. Petersburg, Fla., after a one-day illness.
      Mr. Wanless left Duluth last December, spent the Christmas holidays in Connecticut and then went to St. Petersburg to spend the remainder of the winter with Mrs. Wanless and their daughter, Miss Agnes Wanless.
      Mr. Wanless was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal church, the Kitchi Gammi club, Northland Country club, the Minnesota State Bar association and the Eleventh Judicial District Bar Association, Palestine lodge No. 79, AF & AM, the Scottish Rite bodies of Duluth and Aad Temple of the Shrine.
      He was born at Varna, Huron county, Ont., July 20, 1865. He came to Duluth in 1891 and was associated with the law firm of Moer, Towne & Harris. On Aug. 1, 1892, he became associated with the law firm of Billson & Congdon and was later admitted to the bar. After the dissolution of that firm, Mr. Wanless' association continued with the late Chester A. Congdon and more recently with the Congdon Office Corp., altogether covering a period of more than 45 years.
      Mr. Wanless is survived by his widow and two daughters, Agnes of Duluth and Mrs. John B. Lightfoot of Orange, N.J. The Wanless home here is at 1632 East Superior street.

    This unidentified daguerrotype was found in the belongings of James B. Wanless along with the pictures of his parents David & Christiana. These were the only pictures he had of this vintage, leading us to believe this is a picture of a valued family member. It may be a photo of his grandfather James, taken in the 1860s, some 25+ years after the 1838 wedding portrait, or it may be some other member of this family.
