      With the intention of retiring to his dairy and hog ranch near Newberg, Filetus E. Wanless, police sergeant, for a number of years one of the most popular and best-known members of the police department, has handed in his resignation to Chief of Police Clark. The resignation takes effect April 1.

    • Filetus E. Wanless, son of Frank and Harriet Wanless, was born near Eugene, Lane county, Oregon, and passed away in his home in Newberg, January 20, 1923, at the age of 53 years, 9 months, and 6 days. He was united in marriage with Mercy Nichols in 1893. To this union four children were born. With the exception of a short time spent in California, he passed his entire life in Oregon. From 1905 to 1912 he was a member of the Portland police force. Besides the members of his immediate family, he leaves to mourn his departure, the father, Frank A. Wanless, and two sisters, Mrs. Ralph DeSart, and Mrs, Richard Ganes of Salem, Or. The four children of the deceased are: Rupert A. Wanless, who is attending O. A. C., Mrs. Ruth Rees of Springbrook, Mrs. Ramona Shires of Newgerg and Miss Ruby Wanless of this city.

    The San Francisco Call, 26 Dec 1910 - Fugitive Killed In A Running Battle - Prisoner Fires at Policeman and Flees; Is Shot

    Portland, Dec 25th - Bringing to an end a running battle which started early today when Patrolman Hinzon and Police Sergeant Wandless attempted to disperse a crowd of brawlers at Third and Couch streets, Hinzon shot one of the men through the head, killing him instantly. Wandless and Hinzon had ordered the men to move on and all but two responded. These two showing fight, Hinzon took one into custody and Wandless started to do the same with the other. Wandless' prisoner whipped out a revolver and fired at the officer, one shot going through Wandless' coat sleeve. The man started to run, the officers in close pursuit, and the fugitive was shot.
