"After that I worked for James Powell, a stockman, who kept sheep and cattle. I remember wading the Jordan River with Jackson Wanlass, a little orphan lad, and walking to our home in Lehi to spend the 24th of July." [An Enduring Legacy: Volume Eleven; Children On the Trail; Tells Her Childhood Story (Margaret Simmons Bennett Beck)] -- Jackson's father died in Oct 1864, and this lady was telling stories of the early 1860s, so this must be this Jackson; this is also in "Heart Throbs of the West", both at ancestry.com

Notes:"DEPARTURE. -- The Columbia, Captain Hutchinson, cleared for New York on the 17th of November, and sailed on the following day, having on board 223 souls of the Saints, under the presidency of Elders John Williams, George Baker, and Benjamin Lloyd."

"NINETY-NINTH COMPANY. -- Columbia, 221 Saints. The ship Columbia left the dock at Liverpool on the sixteenth of November, 1856, and sailed from the river Mersey on the eighteenth, bound for New York with two hundred and twenty-three Saints and some other passengers on board. The Saints sailed under the presidency of Elders John Williams, George Baker and Benjamin Floyd. During the voyage several strong gales and heavy squalls were encountered, in consequence of which considerable seasickness prevailed. On the eleventh of December Sister Skinner was delivered of a son. The cold weather and the heavy rolling of the ship prevented most of the sisters and children from leaving their berths during Christmas, which was spent on board. The Columbia arrived safely in New York, after a voyage of forty-five days, and toward evening of January 1, 1857, the passengers were landed at Castle Garden. The next morning they were visited by brethren from the 'Mormon' office and others. Apostles Parley P. Pratt, John Taylor, George A. Smith and Erastus Snow also visited the newcomers at Castle Garden and gave them good counsel and advice. Soon afterwards most of the Saints continued the journey to St. Louis, Missouri, with a design to go ultimately to Utah. (Millennial Star, Vol. XVIII, pages 779; XVIX, pages 75, 106, 479; Deseret News, Vol. VI, page 37.)"

"Tues. 18. [Nov. 1856] -- The ship Columbia sailed from Liverpool with 223 Saints, under the direction of J. [John] Williams. It arrived at New York Jan. 1, 1857."
