"1798 March 29 William Wanless hind in New Edmiston and Janet Douglas his spouse had a son baptised named William."
!NOTE: Father is listed as William Wanless with mother Janet Douglas. I feel this is an error of the original bookkeeper and that the father is really George Wanless - there is no other record of a Wm Wanless married to Janet Douglas, but there are records for George & Janet. . !Letter from William W. Anderson, Attorney and Counselor at Law, Union National Bank Building, Houston, Texas dated August 31, 1932 to Emily Wanless Reeves 1396 So. Main Street, Salt Lake City, Utah:
"My grandfather William Wanless was master of the parish school at Longformacus, Berwickshire, Scotland, dying likely in the late fifties, and his daughter Elizabeth Wanless, one of twenty-two full brothers and sisters, was my mother. This William I understand was a graduate of the University of Edinburg, and a Latin, Greek and Hebrew scholar, but I do not recall the place of his birth although I may have it noted with other memoranda not found on searching since your letter came.... My grandmother Wanless was Margaret Graham. Other children of my grandparents were Jeannie Lindsay, Ellen, Isabel, Margaret, Jessie, George, Robert, James, Andrew, John and Alexander, and I think Douglas and Graham..."

!Letter from Robert A. Anderson, 225 South Hamel Drive, Beverly Hills, California dated August 15, 1932 to Emily Wanless Reeves 1396 So. Main Street, Salt Lake City, Utah:
      Dear Madam,
Your letter of June 15th was forwarded to me by my sister and we were very glad to hear from you.
You will please pardon my delay in not answering you sooner. We were on the way for some time here after we left Salt Lake City, where I called on your nephew.
You missed the treat of your life by not seeing the Olympic Games here, as they were beyond description of perfection in every way, and the weather was perfect for every day.
We have been so busy going to the Games every day and trying to get a place in which to live, but we have finally located a comfortable bungalow and hope to be normal in a few days after this dizzy rush.
We have traveled in our car for a year and were three months in the old country where I got the name and dates from the old tombstone on my Grandfathers grave in Longformacus in Scotland.
You certainly have a good list of the old relatives of your family.
I have no doubt that your Grandfather and mine would be first or second cousins with such an uncommon name and coming from so near the same place.
I think Longformacus is a parish. It is also a small village. It is marked on some of the maps, as I finally found it on one when I was in Scotland. It is not far from Duns and about fifteen miles from Edinburgh.
My grandfather, William Wanless was educated for a presbyterian Minister but did not like to address people in church. He seemed to be backward about preaching, so taught school in Longformacus instead and taught in the same school for 45 years, or all his working life.
He was married to Margaret Graham and they had seventeen children. They are all dead now except Ellen Wanless who lives at Duntroon, Ontario, Canada. Her married name is Mrs. Ellen Leach. She was the youngest of the family and is now 84 years old. Her brothers and sisters names (my uncles and aunts) were James, John, William, Alexander, George, Andrew, Jean, (Elizabeth, my mother) Jessie, Isabella,. Margaret, and Ellen and Robert. Some 4 children died in infancy. Thirteen grew to manhood and womanhood. I have seen Eleven of them and I remember when twelve of them were alive.
Grandfather William Wanless born 3/29/1797 Died 5/25/1866
His mother's name was Janet Douglas, supposed to be descended from William Douglas, 7th Earl of Morton.
My Great Grandfather's name was George Wanless, who had six brothers. The youngest brother had power of healing by rubbing on of hands which robbed his vitality and he died young. They came from the North in troublesome times. (North, no doubt means from the North of Scotland to the English border or around Edinburgh)
My Grandmother's name was Margaret Graham, born 10/28/1803 Died 11/2/1847.
Her mother's name was Isabel Allan and her Father's name was James Graham.
All of the Wanless family of my Aunts and Uncles came to the United States or Canada to live except Isabella and George.
I have a cousin in Toronto, Ont. Canada, Mrs. Margaret Scott, address 537 Broadview Ave., who gave me about all this information. She is at present in Scotland but should be back in Toronto about Oct 1st. So if you care to write her there and give her the same information about your ancestors that you have given me, she may be able to trace up more about any connection we might have. You can also write to my brother, Wm. M. Anderson, 717 Anita Ave., Houston, Texas and give him the same information and ask him if he has done any thing about looking up the history of the Wanless and Anderson families in the Edinburgh record office. You can ref. my name to both of these people if you write them. I was sorry we did not get time to meet you personally when we were in Salt Lake City. I enjoyed the few minutes chat we had with your nephew, Harry Wanless.
Please give him my kindest regards when you see him.
You can reach us at address as below until further notice, as we expect to live here. After visiting in every state in the Union we like these surroundings the best of any. So am very glad we came here.
Write us any time you feel like it and if I get any information regarding the Wanless family of the old days, I will be glad to let you know about it.
      Yours Truly
      Robert A. Anderson"

Note that Margaret Graham died before her youngest daughter Ellen was a year old.
