    • Well Known Literary Man Dead
Detroit, Dec. 23. Andrew Wanless, a well known literary character of Detroit and poet and prose writer of no mean ability, died at his residence here from pneumonia. For many years Mr. Wanless conducted a second hand book store that was a resort for local literary men. He possessed a magnificent library of about 22,000 volumes, comprising some very old books and manuscripts. Mr. Wanless was born in Scotland in 1824, removed to this country in 1851, eventually settling here in 1860.

(This notice appeared in many, many papers in the US.)
Occupation poet, book binder & dealer in rare books
    Notes
    • An Andrew Wanless of Michigan served in the Civil War, but might not be this one - but I've found no other match yet. Should check 1890 veteran's census to see if he's listed in Detroit.

Wanless, Andrew, Co. EH 24 Michigan Infantry, Private (notes say "Wanbeck Andrew"), box 545, extraction 45, record 1185, allegiance Union

Death records for 1898 on FHL 1377698 "Wayne co, Mich deaths" don't include Detroit; nothing about this in the FHL catalog. Could probably request death rec from city archives.
