, William, 14, at home, b. Canada, single
--This census is arranged alphabetically so you can't tell if all the above people live together or not. I think they are from 2 separate families - Paul from Thomas W & Julian Butcher line and Gilbert, Mary, and William from Gilbert W & Jane Wright. But who is William? Mary's son, using Gilbert's surname? Or Gilbert Jr who was born in 1886 and would be 14 ? Is Mary really Ann Jane Shaw?

    Notes
    • Will of Gilbert Wanless, Montreal, in possession of Elaine Smyth-Bogumil, leaves property to son: "Gilbert Francis Wanless, 'clerk', Montreal Quebec"

All info on Gilbert Francis's descendants from Marya Rose-Buckingham & Elaine Smyth-Bogumil (see Researchers page).

Not found in 1891 Canada census. However, there is this entry, living right where Gilbert was listed in the 1891 street directory:

      Montreal East - St Louis ward - district 172 subdist 68 page 23 & 24
William Wandless, 45, married, self & parents b. England, Church of England, gardener
Laura Wandless, 35, married, wife, b. Que, parents b. England, self & children are Presbyterian
Daisy, 11, dau, b. Que, father b. Que, mother b. England
Pansey, 6, dau, b. Que, father b. Que, mother b. England
Purthy, 4, son, b. Que, father b. Que, mother b. England
-- Note the children state their parents' birthplaces backward if Wm & Laura are their parents - Wm was b. Eng and Laura in Que. The neighbors on this page and the next correspond to the people listed in the 1891 Lovell directory, in the street directory section, as all living on Sanguinet Street in the 521-590 block, where Gilbert Wanless was listed at 521 Sanguinet. Gilbert at this time would be about 39 and was a merchant. Laura is probably his sister, not his wife, and should be about 43. Gilbert b. 1886 would be 4, but is he called Purthy here and William in the 1892 Washington census? Laura IS supposed to have had a daughter called Daisy, per family lore, but it's unclear if Daisy is the same person as Laura who was age 4 in the 1881 census. This may be Laura and her illegitimate children, but we're not sure who William really is - maybe he's not really a Wanless. Or could it be Ewen, who is 51 and also listed as blind with his sister Emily ? He *was* a gardener. Maybe Gilbert & Jane & Hyde Ernest are on their way to Washington state...

      Not found after 1891 census.

Ann Jane came to the US in 1895/96 according to her census statements (although if the 1892 census in Tacoma is them, they were here earlier). Since she was a widow in the 1900 census, we assume Gilbert was dead by then.
