      "The Gilbert Wanless Home
(1923) Circa 1925 The house that Dad built 41-38th Street Started out s 129 Eastwood Ave. Here Love abided for many years"

Beryl Wanless Rose wrote the above on the back of this photo. I wonder if 1923 was her 'guess' at when they bought the property/started building?

The house that Gilbert (Grampa to me, Marya) built in the west end 'outskirts' of Toronto, Canada when the area was first changing from farmland to 'suburbs'. Remembering what was mainly fields for a lot of us when we were little people and the 'hill' on the front lawn seemed so big. Funny how that hill got smaller in a very short time, no longer big enough for us to slide down. Then we graduated to the hill across the street. It shrunk too, especially after someone built a house at the bottom of it.
Remembering the terraced south side (L.H.) with tulips down the edge as you went to the lower lawn and was a Rivulet in spring and often soggy after rain. The badminton net. The Johnston's old bobsled against the side of their house. The sadness when the lot was sold and a house was built there.

    Notes
    • No baptism in the Drouin collection of Montreal records.

Descendants had thought he was the son of Gilbert Francis Wanless & Ann Jane Shaw, but the evidence is looking like he was the illegitimate son of Laura Wanless, sister of Gilbert Francis. We have found Ann Jane in California in 1900-1938, with a son called Ernest born abt 1881 in Canada & claiming he is her only child, and we have found his baptism. Why would she not raise or claim Gilbert if he was hers?

Gilbert may be the 4 yr old boy called Purthy listed with Laura in the 1891 census. See the entry of Gilbert Francis W for explanation.

Gilbert was in a 'boys home' from the ages 3 to 8 (approx). He supposedly remembered a tall man visiting him (ANYBODY would have been tall because Grampa was a very small person) Around the age of 8 years, Gilbert was taken in and raised by "Old Mrs. Wanless"...it was later determined, by collective family memory, that this was his unmarried aunt Laura Susan Wanless. The Wanlesses were Methodist, we think..He 'took the oath' -of abstinence. He grew up under a 'cloud' believing that HE was illegitimate ...but called Susan 'Mother'.
Gilbert Wanless (could find no birth certificate) worked for the Montreal Gazette. Married Mary Noble...They moved to Toronto circa 1911 and he worked for the Toronto Telegram. At some time before 1920, he returned to Montreal & brought back his 'mother' ...She may have been senile. She died & is buried in Toronto at Mount Pleasant Cemetary. Gilbert & Mary had 5 children (who survived infancy) Beryl (Rose), Ruby(Smyth), Gilbert, Ethel (Jones) & Evalyn (Evans). He built a home in Long Branch circa 1920. [per Elaine Smyth-Bogumil]
