    • [papers in possession of Claire Wandless]

Proceedings of The Regimental Board dated 15 August 1838 concerning Private George Wandless, Royal Newfoundland Veteran Company, St Johns, Canada.

Born “in the Parish of Barnard Castle, in or near the town of Barnard Castle in Co Durham, by trade a labourer“.

Attested for the 90th Regiment of Foot at Leeds, 1 October 1825 at the age of 28, by trade a weaver. Enlisted at Leeds 21 October 1825.

Service- 12 years + 234 days of which 5 years were in Halifax, Novia Scotia, N America, 2 years + 9 months in St John, Newfoundland and the remainder “at home“. (Note none in Mediterranean or East & West Indies).

Description at time of discharge - he was said to be 42 years of age, 5ft 7 3/4 inches tall, brown hair, grey eyes, fresh complexion, and a labourer by trade. His conduct was described as “generally good“.

Medical Report states” this man has suffered from epilepsy for some years which disabled him from further service. The disease has not been aggravated to my knowledge by vice or misconduct.” (There are more details regarding the Principal Medical Officer’s opinion but are very hard to decipher.) He was invalided and sent to Chatham. (not sure if this is Chatham in Canada or Chatham in England, I favour the latter…)

The nature of his disability first became apparent in 1834 when he was stationed in America. He had been hopitalised including 2 months under treatment in 1834. (There are other details of hospital treatments but can’t decipher them at the moment)

    Notes
    • Baptised 14 June 1795
Married 1820, listed as weaver. Witnesses were Joseph Stephenson and Hannah Bainbridge.

Not in 1841 Barnard Castle census.

No offspring spotted yet. Don't seem to be any offspring baptised in Barnard Castle. (The 1881 census has an unidentified weaver Joseph Wandless from Barnard Castle born circa 1830. I couldn't find him on BC parish registers, he doesn't seem to show on the BC census we have collected so far and he doesn't show on any of the BC Wandless wills I have so it would be useful to trace his origins. I checked St Nicholas parish Durham City already)

A possible candidate for the George Wandless who is listed in Durham Quarter Sessions (1861-1871) who was committed by Morley Headlam Esq, 19 Apr 1866 for a misdemeanour on bail, "unlawfully attempting to carnally know a certain greyhound at Barnard Castle". He was tried and discharged 2 July 1866. (Unfortunately no age details were given, the local newspaper might reveal exactly who was the George Wandless in question, but Durham Record Office search of the month of July newspapers revealed nothing).

Possibly the George Wandless who died in Barnard Castle Workhouse and was buried 16 July 1868.
