His Regimental Discharge Documents describe him as-
a clerk by trade, born in the Parish of Baltinglass in or near the town of Baltinglass in the County of Wicklow.  He signed up in Newry in the County of Down on 20 Apr 1824 at the age of 20. His service of 26 years and 335 days included 16 years and 9 months abroad, 4 years in West Indies and 12 yrs 9mths in North America.
A Sergeant when discharged in March 1851, his character and conduct were described as good.
Tried by his Regiment 6 Sep 1830 "for losing or making away with mess(?) money" - reduced from Corporal on 12 Nov 1832 by his Regiment for absence from tattoo and on 12 March 1839 for being drunk on licquer.
His Attestations dated April 1824 describe him as 5ft 6 and threequarter inches tall, 20 years old, fresh complexion, blue eyes, dark brown hair.
Service Record gives comprehensive details of ranks/pay etc and note he was imprisoned for 15 days in Nov 1832, reason not given but it does not seem to tie in with above misdemeanours!
At time of discharge he was 5ft 8 inches tall, 46 years and 11 months, hair dark brown, blue eyes, fresh complexion, clerk by trade, no marks or scars, intended place of residence Brackville, Canada West.

    Notes
    • May have lived in/near Brackville, Ontario in or shortly after March 1851 when he was discharged from the military. Likely this was Brockville, on the St. Lawrence River in Leeds county, just downriver from Kingston where he later lived. Not mentioned in
      http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~maryc/leedsbellev.htm
which has Brockville marriages & deaths from Jan 1850-Dec 1851 (from the local newspaper; also no mention of a Robinson/Robison family or Oliv*).

Not found in 1851 Canada census at ancestry.com. Checked all Johns b. around 1804 in Brockville, all Wan*, Wau*, etc. names.

Could this be John's first wife? I don't know if 22 is her age or what. He is the only Sergeant John Wandless that we know of in this area at this time.

Jane, wife of Sergeant John Wandless
      d. 31 January 1850 - 22
      [findagrave.com]
      --------------------------

His birth date appears to be abt 1804 in Baltinglass Parish County Wicklow ("to the best of his knowledge"). This may or may not be true; it is equally possible that they moved there when he was a baby. He enlisted in Newry, Co. Down in 1824.

Burial record transcription lists age as 64 in 1867 (i.e. b. 1803), but 1861 census lists him as 54 (i.e. b. 1807), so birthdate is uncertain. Burial record specifies he was b. Ireland, which ties him to the correct John in the census (there is another John, age 65, b. England, in the 1861 Kingston census).

These infant burials in the same cemetery as him are probably his children; the timeframe is right and one is named for his wife (source: Cataraqui Burial Register, vol. 1):
      80 - Wanless, Olivia Sarah, 2y 9m., b. & d. Kingston, 27 Oct 1854, clergy Rev RV Rogers, Sec C
385 - Wanless, Henry George, 9mo., b. & d. Kingston, 27 Aug [was listed with other 1859 burials], clergy Rev Mr Rogers, Sec P

Called "William & Olivia" in son George's marriage to Alice Rightingburg, and "William and Elizabeth" in George's marriage to Emma Pudney. Son Charles's 1886 marriage rec calls parents John Wandles & Olivia Robinson; his 1888 marriage rec lists parents as John Wandless and Elizabeth Robinson - I'm assuming these are all the same couple as George's parents. Note Charles's 1910 census entry says his dad was b. Ireland, which fits nicely with the New Brunswick John.

No record of a baptism of any WANLESS in the St. Andrew's Presbyterian register published by the Kingston Branch O.G.S. [from a lookup volunteer]
