Man Wanted at Elko Arrested at Sac'to
Elko, Feb 8 - F.R. Wanless, wanted here on a charge of embezzlement, was arrested at Sacramento yesterday by detectives of that city, word received here last night announced. Sheriff Harris immediately started a deputy for the California city to bring back Wanless for whom a warrant was issued more than a month ago.

Reno Evening Gazette 12 Feb 1924
Fred Wanless, former construction superintendent for the Phelps Construction Company on their Elko-Halleck contract, was brought back to Elko last night by Deputy Sheriff Lamon to face embezzlement charge. He was arraigned before Judge Clark this morning and waived preliminary hearing. His bond was placed at $3000 which he was unable to furnish.

Reno Evening Gazette 12 March 1924
Summary: Fred Wanless, charged with embezzling some supplies from the company, asserted that Lee Jansen, another representative of the company, who swore to the complaint against him, had proposed bribing highway department employees to grease acceptance of the job. He also says the highway men were offered presents to agree to temporary suspension of the work. State Engineer Borden says Wanless's charges were investigated and found flimsy, that the men he claims were bribed did not have the authority to accept the job.

From Los Angeles in 1939 - Mary Wanless Obituary
      Birth date from Clarence Bagnall
Have death cert. of son, David Arthur 6 Jun 1915 SLC

In 1900 Platteville, Weld Co., Colorado Census with George W. Abbett family; marked married but wife is not shown with him and his birthdate is May 1872. His wife is not with her parents and is not found anywhere else.

In 1910 his wife is with her parents & children and Fred appears to be in Oklahoma with a different wife & child - see tree 99. We would welcome any corroborating or disputing evidence to determine whether this is 1 Fred or 2 Freds. If it's the same man, it appears that he bigamously married Ida May Pierce and stayed with her for several years before returning to Margaret.
