The elegant parlors of the residence of Mrs. Wanless were filled to overflowing on Christmas Eve by guests invited to attend the wedding of Mr. W. Butler and Miss E. Thurber. Some forty or fifty ladies and gentlemen were present, and it has seldom been our lot to witness so happy and large an assembly. At 8 o'clock the marriage ceremony was performed in an impressive manner by Rev. D. J. Pierce. Mr. & Mrs. Ira Carrington and Mr. William Dunn and Miss Belle Kuster assisting as groomsmen and bridesmaids. The bride was gracefully attired in a delicate silver gray silk, elegantly trimmed with lace. Mrs. Carrington wore a lavender silk and Miss Kuster a pleasing drab. Mrs. Carrington showed us last night a handsome bouquet of large, beautiful, and fragrant roses sent her from California. She used several to adorn her hair and bosom at the ball.
      --------------
Earlier on the same page was a description of the first anniversary ball of the Excelsior Hose Company No. 2, at which" Mrs. Carrington recited "Ode to Our Firemen" in a very creditable manner. Mrs. Carrington then appeared dressed in the garb of a fireman, in color at least (not exactly a fireman's full dress), with hat and trumpet in her hand, and gave a spirited poei entitled "Fire" with so much energy and truthfulness to life that she received a merited encore, to which she gracefully responded.

By An Old Timer - Laramie, Wyo., July 21, 1915
On the 4th of July, 1881, Laramie had prepared for a grand celebration. The grandstand was in front of Smith & Son's store. Colonel S.W. Downey was the orator, and Miss Emma Wanless, a splendid elocutionist, had just started reading the Declaration of Independence, when a telegram was handed to the colonel. He read it to the audience, saying President Garfield [had been shot and] was dying. The people dispersed, sad but quiet. There were about 150 soldiers in town; they all went to the saloons to drown their sorrow.

It is interesting that she is called Miss Emma Wanless here, when she'd been married to Mr Carrington in 1876.

      His Queer Birthmark
A Boy who bears on His Breast the Representation of a Bullet Wound
A curious story comes from Salt Lake City, Utah, which is attracting much attention from friends and acquaintenances of Policeman Charles F. Wanless, shot and killed by Joseph A. Barnes on Sept. 18, 1890, and may furnish medical men with another subject for discussion. Barnes, it will be remembered, was having a quarrel with his wife, which the officer attempted to stop. Barnes fired and the bullet passed through Wanless' heart, leaving a jagged bullet hole in the breast.
A married sister of the dead officer was telegraphed and came for the funeral from her home in Salt Lake. She was much affected by the tragedy and took the loss of her brother to heart. In a short time she returned home. About three months ago, as the report is heard here by friends of the dead officer, his sister gave birth to a boy, perfectly formed but with a red birthmark over the heart, the exact shape and appearance of the wound made in Wanless' breast by the bullet from Barnes' pistol. --- Denver News

    • 1870 Arapahoe Colorado Census (says she was b. Canada)

Birth info from FHL Film #105973 "Parish registers, 1812-1885, St. Andrews" - It shows birthplace Mandota, US. ( Mendota, La Salle co, IL is in the far north of IL.). The 1870 census says she was born in Canada West abt 1859.

Emma Wanless as a communicant received from Emmanuel Hall, Illinois. Transfered to St John's in Denver, Oct 1869. [St Matthews Episcopal Church Parish records of Laramie, Wyoming; parish register dated 13 Sep 1868 - 21 Aug. 1881; FHL book #978.795/L1 K2s; email from Bruce Bagnall.]

Father John's 1886 obit refers to "his daughter Mrs. Steel".

Emma Cecilia Wanless (d/o Frank Armando Wanless) was named by and for Irving Steel's grandmother Emma, who was Mark William's sister. [Margot Vogel]

We don't know if she divorced Ira Carrington and Marshall Eddy or if they died early. We assume she divorced Carrington because there are mentions of him in Laramie papers after her subsequent marriages.

This may be her in the 1890 Denver city directory - but since Irvin is still alive, it's odd that she would be listed separately, since they are still together in 1900....
Mrs. Emma Steele resides 2442 Grant avenue Denver

This looks like her marriage to Mr Hammond, but why is she using her former married surname of Eddy instead of Steele?
