    Notes
    • Middle initial from 1900 census.

John & Nancy married 4 days after his sister-in-law Agnes Clark Wandless died, then 6 mos. later they were living with widower William and taking care of Wm & Agnes's children.

The following death notice may be another child of John's, but if so, she was born years after Nancy's death and his wife is listed as Mary, so did he remarry to a Mary who died before the 1900 census? Also the address is odd, as John lived on Centre Ave in the 11th ward in 1880 and 1900 - is he likely to have moved in between?
      -----------
Alice May Wandless, age 5 yrs 25 days, daughter of John & Mary Wandless died December 20, 1887 of pneumonia. Family lived at 206 Wabash Ave in the 36 Ward. Interment at Homewood Cemetery, Dec. 22, 1887.
      -------------
There is no Allegh. co. marriage record of a John and Mary Wandless between 1877 and 1882 when Alice May was born.
Martha's theory: I think that she is the daughter of James H & Jennie Kress Wandless. They married in 1878 and Alice May was born 11/1882 and died 12/1887. Jennie deserted James in early 1888; perhaps their marriage broke up over the child's death.

Note, however, that John, a widower in the 1900 census, left a widow Margaret at his death in July 1902, so must've remarried in the intervening 2 years. OR - see the Margaret McConkey story - maybe he was married longer but considered himself widowed because they were estranged.
