    Notes
    • Susan was an incredible, complicated woman--dominating (domineering to some!), opinionated, courageous, totally dedicated to my grandfather, artistic, quick to defend those whom she loved. She had been trained to be a concert pianist. When she married my grandfather, instead, and came west to the desert town of Barstow, California, he had a piano set up and waiting for her in their house living room. Mother told me that the neighbors were amazed that my grandmother could sit in the dark and play classical music without looking at any sheets of music. She was also one of the few people who did not leave Needles, California, during the great flu epidemic (1917) when it hit the town. Instead, she and the Catholic priest chose to remain and nurse the sick and dying people. Although my grandmother was a strong Episcopalian, she was disgusted with her church's Episcopal minister, who did leave town! My Aunt Frances told me before she passed away that John & Susan had had a son early in their marriage, a baby who had been sickly at birth and died when he was several weeks old. [Sue Mullins]
