    Notes
    • Would be nice to have the mrg rec of Ann to confirm father's name. Supposedly Frank had her birth rec that showed her mother as Jane Wright, but we can no longer reach Frank for clarification.

Contact for this line: Frank Hughes (see Researcher Registry for address).

My wife's grandmother was Ann Wanless who arrived in Illinois through Canada with her father William Wanless and her brother - believed to be called Francis William, or possibly just William Wanless. Ann Wanless was born in Crook, Co Durham, England in Feb. 1875. Her brother was older then she. She returned to England with her father. The brother remained and contact with him was lost. Ann Wanless told me personally that her father had taken her and her brother to America and that they went through Canada. She said that she was 13 years old at the time, which makes the year 1888/89. If Ann Wanless was indeed Anne Wandless of Wolsingham her three closest siblings would be William (1873), Robert (1869) and Frederick (1867). It seems most likely that William would be the brother who went to Illinois with them, however, I feel sure that she said his name was Frank, which was why our conversation on the topic got started. I had been telling her that both my father and grandfather were called Frank (Francis) and that my grandfather was the son of a man she knew well from the same village as herself. [Frank Hughes]

Note that Ann did name a son Francis, per the 1901 census.

Note that her elder brother John DID go to America in abt 1888, because his son Joseph was born "at sea near America", but he returned to Durham and was there for the 1901 census.

More from Frank Hughes, who no longer responds to emails in 2003:
