Chicago Tribune, 22 Feb 1859 - John Wanless and Joseph Sawyer of Mendota were engaged by a U.S. Marshal to arrest C.F. Linn, an embezzler from California, in Lee Center, but were threatened by a mass of men recently returned from California and then were themselves arrested for kidnapping Linn, who in turn escaped, aided by an uncle who pretended to be a US Marshal.
