RIFLE EXPLODES.
Man Shot in the Face.
WOLLONGONG, Thursday.
Robert Wanless, mechanic, of 42 Sydney road, Marrickville, had a lucky escape from death last night, when he received a bullet in the face at a range of about three yards.
With a number of other young men, he was camped about three miles from Albion Park. The party had been shooting rabbits during the afternoon, and when they returned to camp, Wanless was standing talking to one of the others. Another member of the party had a repeater rifle, from which he thought all the bullets had been discharged; but when he pulled the trigger, tbe weapon exploded and the bullet struck Wanless below the left eye and came out through the neck.
The Illawarra District Ambulance took Wanless to the Wollongong District Hospital.His condition is serious, but not critical.
